5/27 — General Release
- Universal Merchant API & Webhooks Framework:
- Universal Merchant API — Today, we ask custom cart merchants to develop APIs so that Bolt can perform necessary actions (eg. get shipping, tax, create orders, apply discounts). And the way we ask our merchant to do this was inconsistent, with several endpoints and URLs being created.
Moving forward, all actions can be consolidated into one API endpoint that handles multiple actions (hence "Universal" Merchant API - New Webhook Framework — Webhooks are events that Bolt sends to merchants to update the status of transactions within merchant order management and ERP systems (or other third party systems that they use).
Webhooks today are limited in two ways:- The payload is very limited and lacks enterprise-level details which often requires customization
- The payload can only be sent to one location which adds complexity to development and integration with enterprises
- With the new webhook framework:
- We will send a much richer payload that will appeal to enterprises with complex use cases, and we've made it easier to add new data to this payload.
- We've also set us to take the next step to allow different kinds of Webhook events beyond just transaction events (e.g. shopper events, order events, checkout events, and so much more).
- New with the documentation — The user experience is cleaner and more strictly focused on developers that are working with our APIs. We will continue to maintain all documentation related to plugins and plugin integrations to support.bolt.com
- We’ve improved our API Reference with more detailed references to parameter requirements, specifications for errors, as well as, sample request objects, and response objects.
- The content has been overhauled and restructured to flow better so that developers can follow the guides precisely with more confidence.
- And given the new infrastructure of the documentation, we'll be to iterate much faster with continuous optimizations and updates as we learn from the developer community.
- Universal Merchant API — Today, we ask custom cart merchants to develop APIs so that Bolt can perform necessary actions (eg. get shipping, tax, create orders, apply discounts). And the way we ask our merchant to do this was inconsistent, with several endpoints and URLs being created.

Bolt is launching new support for your shoppers to use multiple gift cards and store credit to pay at checkout. In addition, shoppers can now remove coupon codes so they can add a different code, or update an incorrect code.
This feature adheres to any merchant settings in their shopping cart platform. If a merchant has their platform set to not allow multiple coupon codes or gift cards, then Bolt Checkout will follow these rules as well and reject additional entries. This feature is expected to be available for WooCommerce and Magento Commerce in July.

- Checkout Button v2 — (For BigCommerce & Custom) Bolt has built a better, faster checkout button for retailers. The v1 checkout button would load slightly slower than the rest of a retailer’s site, leading to a brief ‘flicker’ of the button as it would pop up. Checkout button v2 will load instantaneously with a retailer’s site. That’s a better, more seamless experience for shoppers and retailers alike.
Previous Button Installation
For existing merchants we used the following HTML snippet on the merchant’s site to install the Bolt Checkout Button:
<div class="bolt-checkout-button"></div>
New Button Installation
For new or existing merchants who’d like to use the new button, they’ll need to update this HTML snippet to the following:

- Side Cart in Checkout — Bolt has found that shoppers are clicking the mini-cart 7 times for every 10 times that checkout is opened. Based on this, we ran a desktop experiment across the majority of our retailers to determine whether it would be beneficial to show the expanded cart by default on the side of checkout. This A/B test was successful and led to a statistically significant increase (> 1%) in checkout conversion for shoppers on the retailers included in this experiment.
Based on these results, we will be releasing the expanded cart view to all of our retailers on Thursday, April 9th, to provide shoppers with a more seamless checkout experience on desktop devices.

They are then redirected to the merchant’s order success page. Now Bolt has removed the Bolt success page. This will improve conversion metrics for some merchants. Customers sometimes leave the site before being redirected to the merchant’s success page and some merchants use that page to track conversion. See: Bolt Checkout Walkthrough, Purchase with a Bolt Account, Creating a Bolt Account.

- New — Prefill City/State from Entered ZIP — When a shopper enters a US ZIP code into an address form and then tabs or clicks into the next field, the city/state fields are immediately updated. If the ZIP code maps to multiple cities/states, then the most likely site is used. If the ZIP code is invalid, the shopper will see the current invalid ZIP error message. If the ZIP code is valid but does not correspond to any city/state, then the city/state fields won’t change. If the shopper returns to the ZIP field changes the ZIP to a new one and then exits the filed, the city/state will update again. The ZIP code won’t cause the city/state fields to prefill if the shopper uses any non-typing method. For example, if the shopper uses Google Autocomplete or other autofill. In these cases, Bolt will use the ZIP/city/state as provided by the autofill.
